New Boots
Ikaika got his new boots around February 1. He has survived a swollen and numb toe (boots too tight), and the breaking in process, and seems to be doing well. At least this time he did not lose all of his jumps. He had to get his orthotics re-covered as they were breaking down and it was thought to be causing the numb toe. In the process, his orthotic was changed a little and he did lose progress on jumps he had made, so our wonderful orthotic technician changed his orthotic back to the same way it was before. Close call.
Skaters all know that the boot has to fit snug to work well. If it is snug, then every movement translates seamlessly onto the ice. Ikaika is really close to “good” with the boots the way they are. There is one more problem on the left foot, still a little too tight, but hopefully this time when it gets punched out it will not affect the jumps too much. It always amazes me how little changes in boots and blades cause such major changes in performance on the ice.
Right now he is training with his primary coaches and training mates, working intensely on his jumps and spins. He is mentally and physically tired, but is getting used to the rhythm of everything. He will have lots to work on when he gets home.
